General Goal:
Providing learning opportunities to acquire sufficient knowledge about labor physiological processes, maternity monitoring and management during different stages of labor, and controlling midwifery emergencies, abnormal labors, complications of postpartum period, and different contraceptive methods
Behavioral Goals:
At the end of the program, students are expected to:
1. Express the physiological and biochemical processes of childbirth.
2. Analyze the physiology of different stages of natural labor.
3. Explain episiotomy and injuries during labor.
4. Explain immediate maternal and neonatal cares in postpartum period.
5. Explain the examination of the placenta and fetal membranes and their abnormalities.
6. Explain anatomic and physiologic changes and postpartum cares.
7. Compare different methods of anesthesia in labor.
8. Express different types of medications used in labor, and their congenital, fetal, and neonatal complications.
9. Explain premature birth.
10. Explain premature rupture of membranes (PROM).
11. Describe prolonged pregnancy.
12. Explain fetal development disorders during pregnancy.
13. Explain blood incompatibility of fetus and mother during pregnancy.
14. Mention the causes of fetal distress in different stages of pregnancy.
15. Describe evaluation methods of fetal health in labor.
16. Elaborate on generalities of dystocia and world health organization (WHO) partograph.
17. Compare different disorders in uterine contraction forces.
18. Elaborate on different types of presentations, status, abnormal growth, and shoulder dystocia of fetus.
19. Compare different types of pelvic stenosis.
20. Explain different disorders of pelvic soft tissue disorders.
21. Explain clinical chart of midwifery emergencies and main procedures when dealing with such situations.
22. Explain postpartum period complications (bleeding, infection, thrombosis and embolism, and mental behaviors and complications).
23. Explain general principles of C-section.
24. Compare assisted delivery (forceps and vacuum).
25. Explain different male and female contraceptives.
26. Explain about the role of midwives in advancing the goals of family planning and health.

Teaching Methods:
Education and training in this course is student-centered and based on lectures, question-answer, group discussion, and conference presentation by students. The course plan is in the form of team member teaching design, teamwork, journal club, and article.
Responsibilities of Students:
· Regular presence in class and avoidance of unjustified absence
· Pre-studying based on the predetermined subjects and references
· Active participation in answering questions raised during class discussions
· Providing and presenting assigned tasks in due time
Assessments of Students:
10% Active attendance in class and presenting articles
10% Mid-term exams
20% Developmental assessment
20% Presenting conference and journal club
40% Final exam
Mid-term and final exams will be taken in form of multiple-choice (MCQ) and modified essay questions (MEQ).

Guidelines to Provide Conferences
Contact the relevant professor to provide and set conferences and collect the related materials. A copy of conference with correct punctuation and references should be delivered to the professor at least a week before the presentation.
Guidelines to Provide Articles
Each related article in the course will be presented by one student. Presence of essential clues in articles will lead to the provision of more articles.
In order to approve the article, students should contact a relevant professor and send the English prescription of the article to professor at least a week before its presentation. At the end of the term, a compact disk containing the presented articles and conferences, and at least ten standard questions from each article, will be provided for the professor.
