General Goal:
Acquiring sufficient knowledge and skill in the field of natural and unnatural childbirth and contraception methods
Behavioral Goals:
At the end of the internship, students must be able to:
1. Detect the appropriate time to hospitalize a parturient and perform necessary measures.
2. Perform all necessary procedures of natural labor clients according to their priorities, and determine an appropriate measurement for the client.
3. Differentiate normal and abnormal pelvis (considering evaluation criteria of pelvis).
4. Detect abnormal progress of labor and analyze its causes.
5. Perform the necessary procedures when faced with abnormal progress of labor.
6. Detect shoulder dystocia and be able to perform necessary maneuver to exit fetus shoulders.
7. Detect initial conditions of induction and augmentation, and be able to perform necessary cares in time of induction and reinforcement of uterus contractions.
8. Be familiarized with and perform authorized and unauthorized cases of vacuum extraction and forceps delivery, if required.
9. Participate in performing breech birth.
10. Detect premature birth with regard to the clinical symptoms.
11. Correctly perform treatment procedures when faced with premature birth according to the physician’s order.
12. Perform diagnostic measures in suspected cases of premature rupture of membranes according to their priorities.
13. Perform necessary cares of parturient suffering from premature rupture of membranes.
14. Detect prolonged pregnancy according to the evidences and available information.
15. Perform necessary cares in management of premature birth.
16. Detect pre-eclampsia patients with regard to the clinical symptoms.
17. Perform necessary cares in case of pre-eclampsia according to the prescriptions in medical files of patient.
18. Correctly transfuse the blood for cases with required blood transfusion.
19. Detect cases with need of C-section and manage pre-op procedures.
20. Be familiarized with pharmacological and non-pharmacological painless procedures, and perform them in case of physician’s order.
21. Correctly examine the placenta, detect the abnormalities, and perform abortion.
22. Detect labor injuries, and perform episiotomy, repair perineal, periurethral, vaginal, and cervical ruptures in the scope of their duties.
23. Teach the healthcare measures to mothers after treating labor injuries.
24. Fully examine neonates and interpret the results, and be familiarized with medical emergencies in abnormal clinical examinations of neonates in delivery room (e.g., diaphragmatic hernia and omphalocele).
25. Perform neonatal resuscitation, if required.
26. Detect abnormal postpartum bleeding, and perform necessary healthcare in management of postpartum bleeding.
27. Perform midwifery emergencies, measures and necessary predictions in labor stages of mothers suffering from medical conditions (e.g., vascular, respiratory, renal, coagulation, diabetes, infectious issues).
28. Correctly control fetal heartbeat, detect abnormal issues, and perform correct measures.
29. Know the procedures of applying fetal heartbeat monitoring devices, and be able to read and interpret different types of fetal heartbeat electrocardiography.
30. Be familiarized with new and modern diagnosis procedures of fetal distress and interpret its results.
31. Be familiarized with goals and characteristics of baby-friendly hospital initiative (BFH) and mother-friendly hospital (MFH).
32. Present a scientific conference or a journal club regarding new scientific discussions about internships.
33. Manage the maternity internship of BSc students for two days under the supervision of an instructor.
34. Provide and sample a sectional research project in subjects related to internship under the supervision of an instructor.
35. Explain indications, conditions and techniques of inserting IUD.
36. Insert IUD according to the instructions.
37. Teach IUD post-cares to the mother.
38. Evaluate and manage the complications of inserting IUD.

Teaching Methods:
Simulated patient, workshop, and student practice method
Responsibilities of Students:
· Presence in the internship setting at the scheduled time
· Performing the tasks based on the determined goals under the supervision of related instructor
· Compliance with professional requirements at all times
· Appropriate communication with all individuals in the ward, including parturient, personnel, students, and instructor
· Having a simple appearance and not using jewelry and accessories
· Active participation in group discussions
· Report to the instructor inn case of any unusual issues in analysis, observations, and examinations
Assessment of Students:
20% active participation in clinical round
50% clinical performance in the ward in the form of mini clinical evaluation exercise
10% providing and presenting conferences and journal clubs
5% management of the internship ward of BSc students (peer assessment)
51% providing and presenting research project
