General Goal:
Increasing the level of knowledge of students and applying scientific contents to provide maternal and child health, premarital health services, healthcare services during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period, family planning, newborn and child health
Specific Goals:
At the end of this course, students are expected to:
1. Express the goals of maternal and child health.
2. Compare different methods of providing maternal and child healthcare services in Iran and the world.
3. Elaborate on the importance of premarital counselling and methods of service provision in Iran.
4. Explain new notes on healthcare services during pregnancy.
5. Explain new notes on healthcare services during childbirth and postpartum period.
6. Elaborate on the importance of using growth curve, and its drawing and interpreting methods.
7. Name and briefly explain evolutionary tests.
8. Name the characteristics and signs of a healthy neonate.
9. Explain health care of high-risk infants.
10. Describe various types of vaccines, and be able to name relevant vaccines of each type.
11. Elaborate on child immunization program according to recent instructions of ministry of health and medical education.
12. Compare the growth and development of infants and children in different age periods and developmental fields (newborn, infant, toddler, preschool, primary school) with each other.
13. Elaborate on important principles of nutrition for one-year to school-aged children.
14. Describe effective factors on growth and development of children.
15. Name prevalent diseases of children and their preventive health services and treatments procedures.
16. Provide a program based on health education processes to teach pediatric healthcare services to mothers.
17. Elaborate on management of health programs, its role in planning, performing, monitoring, and evaluating health programs.
18. Explain population alteration structures and processes, population pyramid, and effective factors on population structure and movement (cultural, economic, and social).
19. Describe the health indicators related to the mortality rate of infants, children, mothers, and ways to prevent their mortality.
20. Describe the association between family planning and maternal and child health.
21. Explain various combinations of contraceptives, the combination, effect mechanism, applications, contraindications, benefits, complications, and treatment methods, how to use, in case of negligence, necessary training, and relevant cares.
22. Name different contraceptive injection methods and elaborate on combination, effect mechanism, applications, contraindications, benefits, complications, and treatment methods, necessary training, and relevant cares.
23. Describe tests, necessary examinations, and follow-up visits before initiating hormonal procedures according to the latest prescriptions of contraceptives.
24. Name barrier methods of contraception and compare effect mechanism, applications, contraindications, complications, and treatment methods, necessary training, and relevant cares with each other.
25. Name the surgical methods that prevent pregnancy, and compare their complications, necessary trainings, and relevant cares with each other.
26. Describe the necessary tests and examinations before surgeries, which prevented pregnancy according to the latest prescriptions of contraceptives.
27. Name natural methods of birth control and explain necessary educations.
28. Name different types of intrauterine device (IUD) and explain effect mechanism, applications, contraindications, side effects, and treatments.
29. Explain the necessary tests and examinations before inserting the IUD and the important points in subsequent follow-ups according to the prescriptions of contraceptives.
30. Elaborate on IUD insertion techniques according to recent instructions of ministry of health and medical education.
31. Name emergency contraception, and explain their applications, side effects, treatments, failure possibilities, and necessary educations.
32. Explain appropriate contraceptives around menopause and after that.
33. Name new contraception methods.
34. Explain the role of midwifery, family, and health treatment facilities in performing health programs and family planning.

Teaching Methods:
Lecture, question-answer, student conferences, providing journal club based on evidence-based medicine (EBM), providing counseling in the form of roll playing
Responsibilities of Students:
· Active and on-time attendance in class
· Pre-studying based on prescribed topics
· Active participation in class discussions
· Providing and presenting conferences and topics prescribed by the relevant professor
Assessments of Students:
20% developmental evaluation
10% active and on-time attendance in class, question-answer participation
20% providing and presenting conference and journal club
50% self-assessment and final exam
